Reasons to be More than Just Angry About the AIG Bailout

Richard Thompson, President of the Thomas More Law Center sent out a personal request today titled, “We’re More than Just Angry About the AIG Bailout,” that I believe all good Americans should be interested in reading. Here’s the body of his request:

Washington politicians, pretending they had nothing to do with it, are expressing their shock and anger at the $165 million in bonuses AIG paid to its top executives.

Now we learn that AIG distributed billions of the $170 billion bailout funds U. S. taxpayers gave them overseas to foreign banks.

Is this what these politicians mortgaged the financial future of our children and grandchildren for?

You probably agree, AIG’s arrogance and greed is only matched by the incompetence of the political “leaders,” who gave them billions in bailout funds with little concern over how it was to be spent.

As you know, the politicians didn’t even read the bailout legislation before they voted on it.  And our President signed it.

Sure, all Americans should be angry and outraged with AIG, but YOU can do something about it.

In December 2008, the Thomas More Law Center filed a federal lawsuit against the U.S. Treasury Secretary and the Federal Reserve Board to stop the impermissible use of bailout funds by AIG.

Now, Department of Justice attorneys out of Washington (supported by our tax dollars) have entered the case to defend the AIG bailout.  They recently filed a motion to dismiss the case.  In a nutshell, the basis of their defense is that there is a crisis (an excuse for everything in Washington these days).

But regardless of the merits of our case, we know we can’t match the financial resources of the Justice Department.  That’s why I’m asking for your financial help.

As you know, all of the Thomas More Law Center’s legal services are without charge.  So, we must rely on private donations from individuals like you to help stop the AIG bailout.

According to our lawsuit, the U.S. government, through its ownership of AIG, which promotes Shariah-compliant financing, is not only violating the Establishment Clause of the Constitution, but it is also financing the destruction of America using American tax dollars.

The basis of our lawsuit is that AIG explicitly promotes Shariah-compliant financing, which subjects certain of their financial activities to the dictates of Islamic law.  In fact, AIG brags about its Shariah-compliant financing on its website and in their press releases.

Now here is something more to be outraged about.

You should know that Shariah law is the body of Islamic law based on the Koran, which is used to demand the destruction of the United States.  This is the same law championed by Osama bin Laden and the Taliban.  This is the same law that prompted the 9/11 Islamic terrorist attacks on our soil that killed thousands of innocent American civilians.

Shariah law is the same law that justifies beheadings, beatings, stonings, and amputations for petty crimes in places like Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Sudan.  It is the same law that demands the murder of infidels.  It calls for the persecution of Christians and Jews.

It is the same law that represses women as second class citizens.

AIG (read our government) employs a three-person Shariah Advisory Board, from Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Pakistan, to ensure the requirements of Shariah law are met in its investments.

The U.S. Treasury Department and Harvard University co-sponsored a seminar in November 2008 entitled “Islamic Financing 101” to promote Shariah financing among American institutions.  Harvard is one of the many American universities and colleges receiving millions of dollars from oil-producing countries, which ultimately influence their Middle East programs.

The Thomas More Law Center’s lawsuit was filed in the Federal District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan on behalf of Kevin J. Murray, a former Marine infantryman who served two tours of duty in Iraq.  Co-counsel on the case is David Yerushalmi, an expert on Shariah law and Shariah-compliant financing, who is affiliated with the Law Center and is general counsel to the Center for Security Policy.

Use of taxpayer funds to acquire a majority ownership interest in a company that intentionally promotes and funds Shariah-based Islamic religious practices violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Greed is destroying whatever loyalty to America AIG had.  And it’s up to the American people to stop Washington’s financial support of an organization that so easily betrays America’s interests.

Things are worse.

An important element of Shariah-compliant financing is a form of obligatory charitable contribution called zakat. This is a religious tax for assisting those that “struggle [jihad] for Allah.”  The amount of this tax is between 2.5% and 20%, depending upon the source of the wealth.  The zakat religious tax is used to financially support Islamic “charities,” some of which have ties to terrorist organizations that are hostile to the United States and all other “infidels,” including Christians and Jews.

For example, The Holy Land Foundation for Relief and Development, recently convicted by a federal jury for providing millions of dollars to Islamic terrorist organizations, is an Islamic “charity” that qualifies for receipt of the zakat.

Thus, as a direct consequence of the AIG bailout, the U.S. government is now the owner of a corporation engaged in the business of collecting religious taxes to fund operations that are anti-America, anti-Christian, and anti-Israel.

As you can see, our lawsuit is as much about protecting constitutional principles as it is about protecting our national security and preventing another 9/11 – whether it is overt through flying planes into buildings, or covert through appropriating taxpayer money to fund a stealth jihad.

So Please Contribute Now.

Sincerely,

Richard Thompson

President and Chief Counsel

P.S.  This is a fight for the financial future of our children and grandchildren and generations to come.  You can do more than just get angry.  Please help us with this lawsuit to stop the AIG bailout. This fight is too important to leave to the Washington politicians.  Please remember your donation is tax-deductible.

I’m a dog lover. I think they are wonderful animals and excellent companions. Just like people, there are good ones and bad ones, but unlike people, their temperament is very consistent and they are reasonably predictable.

I received the picture below in an email and I wanted to share it with you. I hope you dog lovers out there will enjoy it as much as I have.

It's Change, Stupid…

Okay, so here’s my take on why so many people are banging their heads against the wall, wondering what happened to the logic of the American people, and why no one can seem to get through to them.

It’s because things have changed…

1. The “Me” generation had kids and their kids have already had kids! Those of us, who grew up believing we needed to find ourselves and — along the way — satisfy our every desire, are still being just as unabashedly selfish as ever. Many of us still believe we are entitled to whatever we can get and that others should understand and seek to assist us in fulfilling our “wants, needs, and desires.” Bigger is still better and many are eager and willing to risk it all on getting to that next level.

die hard 2 dvdrip download

Unfortunately, too many of these infantile miscreants overextended themselves all at once. In an effort to make an unfounded leap from the lifestyle of the middle class to the lifestyle of the rich and famous, these aging yuppies were offered enough rope to hang themselves and took it. Now, unable to actually financially support all that they had greedily assumed, their houses of cards either have collapsed or are on the verge of collapsing, and they have pulled the country down with them. Of course, they don’t see themselves as the problem, but rather the victims of people they had jealously tried to mimic — jealous mimicry that helped bring about financial difficulties not just for the guilty, but also for the innocent.

Of course, the people who — if they weren’t suffering themselves — would never consider helping anyone else out of a jam are expecting others to rescue them from the effects of their selfish foolishness and greed. They are ready to lay blame wherever they can, so long as it’s not on them, and they will cling despairingly to whatever excuses and rationalizations they can so long as they might possibly garner the sympathy of someone who can help them get out of the mess into which they have gotten themselves.

2. The population of the United States has dramatically changed and is continuing to change. It’s not even the same population we had a few years ago. The United States was founded and built primarily by white Europeans. The overwhelming majority of the immigrants into the country for hundreds of years were also white Europeans, whether eastern or western European, they were still mostly Europeans. Europeans, the same people that built Europe and created some of the most advanced and progressive societies in the history of the world. Europeans, establishers of democracy and just laws. Europeans, who fled their countries and came to the United States because they wanted a better life and were interested in contributing to the future of the United States because they had every intention of living here for the rest of their lives. Europeans, who meant for the United States of America to be the home of their families for many generations to come.

However, the racial face and cultural background of the population in the U.S. began to change dramatically 50-some-odd-years ago. After the United States and its allies, through war and a great loss of life, had brought better conditions to Europe, the European influx into the U.S. began to dry up and in its place came internal upheaval and a new flood of immigrants.

African-Americans rightfully began to gain their freedoms, but with them, they gained the right to vote in a country many had been raised to hate for good reasons. Their interests in the future of the United States in no way coincided with the interests of its white European founders, their descendants, or the descendants of other white European immigrants who had come later. In addition, few of their number were wealthy, unlike those who have become wealthy off the sweat of their black backs, and so they held the wealthy in disdain and many vowed to take from them whatever they could.

Hispanics began to flood the United States in large numbers, first from Cuba then from other countries. Most came to escape the conditions in their countries, but considered themselves only visitors, with every intention of some day going back where they had come from and taking everything they could carry with them. Their interests in the U.S. were temporary and selfish. They had more of a “pilfering” mentality, so any long-term investments held no interest for them. In addition, few of their number were wealthy, unlike those who had become wealthy off the sweat of their brown backs, and so they held the wealthy in disdain and vowed to take from them whatever they could.

Fast forward to today. Most of the U.S. population wants to at least appear to be true Americans — caring and sympathetic to the needs of others, Few want to come across as caring only for themselves and what they can get, particularly when they’ve been told others are hurting — you know that “Me” generation bunch that overextended themselves. But they really don’t. They want whatever they can get today. The accumulation of money and possessions is their primary driving force. Taking everything they can from those who have more (translation: rich white Americans) is very appealing. They have no interest in promoting the welfare of the U.S. because they either a) hate everything it stands for, or b) find the country to be unfamiliar and would change it tomorrow to be just like their home country.

The Americans of today are not the Americans we remember and there is little chance of the America of our youth coming back any time soon. Barack Obama readily identifies with the new face and culture of today’s America. With his culturally diverse background and un-traditionally-American upbringing, Obama is a part of the new American culture. He appeals to the new America that just wants things, and wants them without respect or concern for the institutions that provide them.

To the new America, the U.S. Constitution is an old and dusty document written by a bunch of rich white Europeans. They do not revere it. It is not a part of who they are or where they came from.

Organize for Unborn Human Life

I wrote in my first post on this blog, that I was starting it, not because of a lack of things to do, but as an outlet, a place to get things off my mind so I could move on. I started this blog because I felt I needed a place to make whatever comments I felt like making (including some rants and raves) about whatever things happened to be on my mind that day.

However, sometimes there are things that one just can’t get off one’s mind. Things so important to whom we are that we simply cannot ignore or forget them. For me, one of those things has always been the welfare of the world’s children. From as far back as I can remember, I have always felt and openly expressed a strong desire to not only protect children, but to try my best to make their lives the best they can be.

I suppose I have always tended to champion the underdogs and to me, children begin their lives as the true underdogs of our human family. However, while they are the weakest, most helpless members of our family, they are also the future of our family. They are the hope of our world and need to be preserved and nurtured. They are the single best investment we can make now for the generations of tomorrow.

Unfortunately, not everyone shares my concern or enthusiasm for the welfare of our children. Some find children to be inconvenient and trivialize their importance, even their existence, in selfish pursuit of their personal desires.

I’m talking about the uncivilized, animalistic practice of abortion. Terminating human lives just because someone decides they don’t want that person. To me, abortion is a self-defeating choice for any society and its very existence a clear indication of exactly where we still are on our evolutionary ladder — barely off the first rung.

A few months ago, a couple of young women approached me and asked me for some assistance with an important project they wanted to pursue. They had a new idea for a fresh approach to an old and moldy problem — the abortion debate.

007 tomorrow never dies dvd

I quickly explained to them my beliefs on the whole issue of “debating” anything — it’s for high school students to develop their thinking and speaking abilities — it’s not how the real world works when progress must be made. People who like to engage in debate are time-wasters, procrastinators, and “ne’er do wells,” they’re not the movers and shakers of the planet.

wild things dvdrip

Anyway, to make a long story short, I gave these women, One Dove and Rose, my opinions, some advice, and wished them all the best. They went off and started AbortionAbout.com.

download core the divx

Off and on, they’ve emailed me and called me to ask me questions about one thing or another, I have followed their path and progress, and I liked what they were doing.

Fast forward to today. A new web community-based initiative has been launched in an effort to create a launch pad for an important mission — to end the practice of abortion. The site is Organize for Unborn Human Life and I think it has potential.

I have joined that site to offer my humble assistance wherever I can — should it be needed — and I encourage you, my reader, to do the same if you share my concern for our kids.

Everybody Duck! Comet Lulin is Coming!

Comet Lulin

Two-tailed Green Giant: Comet Lulin

Comet Lulin is expected to buzz Earth late tonight on its way back out to the nether-regions of our galaxy.

signs dvd download

Lulin’s near miss — coming within 38 million miles of Earth — is similar to those of our neighbors Mars and Venus: Mars can come within 35 million miles and Venus within 24 million miles.

Lulin should be visible to the naked eye in clear night skies, sitting just about 45 degrees above the horizon in the southeastern skies — right below Saturn — and any time after 11 p.m. EST, should be good for catching a glimpse of the bright green, gassy giant. Current estimates peg the maximum brightness at 4th or 5th magnitude, which means dark country skies would be best for viewing, but no one can say for sure because this is the first known visit Lulin has made to the inner solar system and its first exposure to intense sunlight, so no one knows just what to expect.

NASA has been tracking Lulin via satellite since January 28, 2009, collecting massive amounts of data about comet, which was discovered in 2007 by Ye Quanzhi.

Ye Quanzhi was just 19 years old and a student of meteorology at China’s Sun Yat-sen University, when he was reviewing a photo taken nights before by Taiwanese astronomer Chi Sheng Lin on “sky patrol” at the Lulin Observatory. AS Ye traced the star field from point to point, he noticed one of the stars was not a star, but a comet.

Lulin travels in a clockwise, parabolic orbit, traveling at 60,000 mph in a retrograde or “backward” direction compared with the solar system’s planets.

Scientists speculate that this may be Lulin’s one and only swing by Earth.

Lulin’s atmosphere is similar in size to Jupiter with a tail and an “antitail” collectively measuring 311,000 miles across. Lulin trails another 250,000 miles of assorted dust and gases, curving right because of the influence of solar radiation.

Lulin’s brilliant green color comes from the gases that make up its atmosphere. Cyanogen and diatomic carbon both glow green when illuminated by sunlight in the near-vacuum of space.

11-Year-Old Accused of Killing Father's Pregnant Girlfriend

Houk Brown Farmhouse Wampum Pennsylvania

The farmhouse where Kenzie Marie Houk was killed on Friday, is shown in Wampum, Pennsylvania, a rural community about 35 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, Saturday, February 21, 2009. Eleven-year-old Jordan Brown is charged in the shooting death of the 26-year-old pregnant mother of two.

An 11-year-old boy shot his father’s pregnant girlfriend in the back of the head, then got on the school bus and went to school, authorities said Saturday.

eye of the beholder online

Eleven-year-old Jordan Brown, son of Houk’s live-in boyfriend, Christopher Brown, was charged yesterday as an adult in the shooting death of 26-year-old Kenzie Marie Houk, who was eight months pregnant, and her unborn child. Brown alledgedly shot Ms. Houk in the head with his shotgun while she was lying in bed in their western Pennsylvania farmhouse.

007 tomorrow never dies movie

The fifth-grader was picked up from his western Pennsylvania school Friday by Pennsylvania State Police and is being held in Lawrence County Jail. Investigators found Houk’s body in bed after her 4-year-old daughter told tree cutters working on the property that she thought her mother was dead, Lawrence County District Attorney John Bongivengo said at a news conference.

At first, young Jordan told police there had been a suspicious black truck on the property that morning, which caused investigators to look into a false lead for about five hours, Bongivengo said.

However, inconsistencies in Jordan’s description of the vehicle finally led police to re-interview the Ms. Houk’s 7-year-old daughter, who implicated Jordan as the killer.

“She didn’t actually eyewitness the shooting. She saw him with what she believed to be a shotgun and heard a loud bang,” Bongivengo said, adding that the weapon, a youth model 20-gauge shotgun, was found in what police believed was the boy’s bedroom.

The shotgun, which apparently belonged to Jordan, is designed for children, and such weapons do not have to be registered, Bongivengo said.

Bongivengo would not say whether the boy confessed to the shooting.

A neighbor said Houk was engaged, had been renting the house for no more than a year, that he had never met Houk’s fiancé, but that he knew both of them had children.

“She was very protective of her kids,” he said, and added that she seemed very excited about her pregnancy.

The neighbor said his wife sometimes drove Houk’s younger daughter to the bus stop because she went to preschool with their 5-year-old.

Houk’s family and friends, who gathered at her parents’ house Saturday night, said Ms. Houk had problems with the boy.

Jason Kraner, Houk’s 34-year-old brother-in-law, said, “There was an issue with jealousy. He told my son stuff… He actually told my son that he wanted to do that to her.”

Dennis Elisco, Jordan’s attorney, said the evidence points to the gunshot wound being “consistent” with the boy’s hunting gun, but he wanted to see stronger proof that it belongs to Jordan. He also said he met Saturday with the boy’s father, Christopher Brown, who Elisco described as being, “in a state of actual shock and disbelief,” and that he planned to file a motion to have the boy released on bail and move the case to juvenile court.

Elisco and the police have both said they know of no motive for the shooting, at this time.

A preliminary hearing is set for Thursday.

Has Obama Caused the Stock Market to Plummet?

Looking at a graph of “Four Bad Bear Markets,” produced by dshort.com,

one could easily surmise that Obama’s election has strongly contributed to the stock market’s perilous plummet.

Four Bad Bear Markets Graph

Click on image for LARGER VERSION

When I look at the graph and follow the timeline (”0″ marks October 9, 2007), Obama’s election, and his actions before and after, seem to eerily parallel the ups and downs of the market.

For many months prior to the culmination of the Obama and McCain camps’ final campaign thrusts, the stock market showed only signs of a classic and manageable recession. But as the end of the presidential race drew nearer and Obama increased his fervent prophesying of impending economic disaster, the stock market mysteriously began to free-fall out of control, spiraling downward, sucked toward the fiscal bottom by the public’s fear until election day.

Immediately following Obama’s election, the stock market shows sign of regular attempts to rally, interspersed with sharp drops that, at least to the layperson’s eye, appear to coincide to a large degree with the president’s postive and negative statements regarding our economy.

The debate and passing of Obama’s Economic Stimulus Package is also indicated on the graph, depicted by a tumultuous variance that ends in a large drop, as concerns swelled over its lack of potential effectiveness.

I’m sure economists and political analysts could dissect and interpret this information in a number of different ways, many of which might counter my views, but to a common thinker like myself, the correspondence seems as plain as the nose on my face.

INTERNATIONAL DIPLOMACY: THE OBAMA DEBACLE CONTINUES

ocean s eleven dvdrip download

Clinton in KoreaHillary Clinton may live to regret her decision to be President Barack Obama’s international “messenger.”

While Obama handled Canada, he sent Hillary off to deal with Asia — especially China and North and South Korea. Armed with the Obama ideology and some cute buzzwords, Hillary naively, but happily, sallied off to set herself up as Obama’s “shield” against criticism and blame for the ensuing chaos Obama seems determined to create in the international community.

Prior to leaving, Hillary prefaced her first trip abroad as secretary of State with a speech explaining the various Obama administration views she intended to convey along her Asia itinerary. On the issue of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program she explained Obama’s wish for continuity with the efforts of the Bush administration — the importance of the six-party talks and the need to “get the negotiations back on track.”

In furthering the “soft talk” policy of the Obama administration when it comes to international diplomacy, Clinton said she was prepared for “active listening” on her trip.

So, how’s she doing?

Clinton called North Korea a “tyranny” and demanded it stop insulting the leaders in the South if it wanted a normal relationship with Washington.

North Korea’s official Rodong Sinmun newspaper responded by saying, “If the U.S. war-thirsty forces are allowed to continue frantically stepping up the moves for another Korean war … the situation on the Korean Peninsula will reach an unpredictable phase and the U.S. will be held wholly accountable for the ensuing consequences.”

Speaking of its attitude toward South Korea following Hillary’s visit, the North’s Committee for the Peaceful Reunification of the Fatherland said in a statement, “We will settle scores with the traitor with the most merciless and resolute determination.”

Meanwhile, North Korea continues to ready its longest-range missile for launch in what some analysts have said is a bid to grab the new U.S. administration’s attention and simutaneously put pressure on Seoul.

International Diplomacy: Obama Style

So far, the Obama Administration seems to be doing a great job of maintaining peace with Canada. However, I’m not too sure about Hilary Clinton’s latest position with China: Overlook human rights violations in favor of pursuing talks about such pressing issues as climate change.

Hillary ClintonIn spite of efforts by seven prominent groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International — who even wrote Clinton a joint letter urging her to tell Chinese officials that China’s relationship with the United States “will depend in part on whether it lives by universally accepted human rights norms” — Clinton has chosen “soft talk” over firm resolve in her dealings with China.

“Successive administrations and Chinese governments have been poised back and forth on these issues… I have had those conversations for more than a decade with Chinese leaders,” Clinton said. She said she did not mean to imply “a lesser concern” for human rights but will spend more time talking about areas where she senses a breakthrough, like the Obama Administration’s hopes of winning China’s cooperation on reducing harmful greenhouse gases.

The position Clinton has adopted — weakness — while perhaps better suited and fitting for a woman — in the eyes of the Chinese — is hardly what the world needs in defense of the millions of people suffering because of China’s lack of respect for basic human rights.

The letter sent by the joint human rights groups pointed out to Clinton that in recent years “human rights concerns have been pushed progressively further to the margins of the US-China relationship” as Beijing has gained economic, military, and diplomatic power.

Perhaps this grows truer by the moment. With the United States now deeply indebted to China and poised to pour millions of American dollars into China’s population control and gender selection abortion efforts, I suppose Hilary feels she best tread lightly. After all, her boss is really the one calling the shots and promoting his agenda with China, Hilary’s just the messenger.

Nevertheless, it’s sad to see the powerful and positive influence of the U.S. quietly slipping away, as the days of a diplomatic powerhouse like Henry Kissinger are clearly gone.

Meanwhile, millions of people are left to suffer.

Here’s a copy of the letter that was sent to Clinton prior to her trip:

February 12, 2009

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton
US Department of State
2201 C Street NW
Washington, DC 20520
VIA FACSIMILE

eye of the beholder divx
Dear Secretary Clinton,

As you prepare to make your first trip to the People’s Republic of China as Secretary of State, our organizations strongly urge you to make human rights issues a prominent topic in your public and private discussions with the Chinese leadership and people.

Your visit will set the tone for the U.S.-China relationship in the new Obama administration. This will be the crucial moment to signal to the Chinese government that the quality of its relationship with the United States will depend in part on whether it lives by universally accepted human rights norms in its domestic and foreign policies. Sending such a signal in Beijing will be especially important given the United States’ unfortunate absence from China’s Universal Periodic Review on February 9 at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. Most important, the Obama administration has pledged to return the United States to a position of leadership in defending human rights; doing so with a rising power such as China will be a key test of that commitment.

blade runner free

Thirteen years ago in Beijing, you spoke eloquently about the duty of all governments to respect the fundamental human rights of women and men. Respect for human rights, you said, means “not taking citizens away from their loved ones and jailing them, mistreating them, or denying them their freedom or dignity because of the peaceful expression of their ideas and opinions.”

In recent years, however, human rights concerns have been pushed progressively further to the margins of the US-China relationship. The Chinese government’s growing financial, diplomatic, and military strength, coupled with its hostility to reforms that challenge the Chinese Communist Party’s grip on power, make China a difficult country in which to effect change.

But the advancement of human rights in, and with, China is arguably more central to U.S. interests than ever before. Press censorship in China makes it possible for toxic food and public health crises to spread globally. Suppression of dissent removes internal checks against environmental damage that has global impact. Abuses of low-wage labor implicate international firms operating inside China and compromise goods that come into the U.S. The government’s control of mass media and the internet allow it to stoke nationalist anger against the United States in moments of crisis. The export from China of internet-censoring technologies and its provision of unconditional aid to repressive regimes increases the U.S.’s burdens in fighting censorship and human rights crises worldwide.

As much as the Chinese government appears to resist outside pressure to improve its record, experience suggests that it does respond to such pressure. American interventions on behalf of jailed government critic Hu Jia contributed to his being moved to a prison closer to his family; sustained international pressure on the Chinese government to permanently relax rules on foreign journalists in China resulted in success. Ordinary people in China will also appreciate hearing the United States raise human rights issues in ways that echo their own day to day concerns about rule of law and government accountability. And we urge that you be mindful of the converse: that the Chinese government and people take careful note when the US is silent.

While the Chinese government has taken some steps to promote human rights, such as enshrining the concept in the Constitution, the gap between its rhetorical commitments and the reality on the ground remains vast. We urge that you raise on this visit the following issues:

  • Tibet and Xinjiang. Tibetans and Uyghurs continue to suffer indiscriminate crackdowns on their rights, typically on the grounds that their peaceful calls for genuine autonomy are in fact a cover for “separatist activity.” You should press Beijing to end the criminalization of peaceful advocacy in and to engage in constructive dialogue over the future of both regions.
  • Torture. As documented most recently by the United Nations Committee Against Torture’s review of China, police torture remains a serious problem, yet evidence obtained through torture is routinely admitted in Chinese courts. You should urge Beijing to alter this policy, and put in place mechanisms whereby alleged incidents of torture are consistently and impartially investigated and evidence procured through torture excluded.
  • Censorship of the domestic press. The Chinese government continues to strictly control Chinese journalists; at least 26 remain in prison due to their work, many on ambiguous charges including “revealing state secrets” and “inciting subversion.” You should urge the Chinese government to cease its widespread media and internet censorship, and fully honor its obligation to guarantee freedom of expression, information, and freedom of the press under Article 35 of the Constitution and international standards.
  • Abuses of human rights defenders, including Huang Qi and Liu Xiaobo. Rather than embrace those who urge greater rights protections, the Chinese government continues to persecute those who publicly criticize it. Veteran dissident Huang Qi faces a possible three year prison term as he reportedly faces trial in Sichuan on charges of “possessing state secrets,” in a prosecution linked to his investigation of poorly constructed schools destroyed in the May 2008 earthquake. Writer Liu Xiaobo, a veteran of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, has now been held by Chinese police since December 2008 for his involvement in organizing Charter 08, a petition calling for greater respect for human rights and democracy in China.
  • The use of extrajudicial forms of detention. Chinese police continue to make frequent use of house arrest, residential surveillance, and administrative detention. There is no basis for these tactics in Chinese law, and you should urge the Chinese government to publicly eschew further use of them.

We strongly urge that you raise these issues early in your tenure as Secretary. We are acutely aware that the U.S.’s agenda with China is a broad one, but we believe that the desired economic, security, and diplomatic progress can be reinforced through more vigorous and public defense of human rights.

100 Foot Borneo Monster Snake — Nabau — Captured!

Nabau, the Borneo Monster, Borneo’s Baleh River creature, a 100 foot snake, has been captured in stunningly realistic detail in recently released, anonymous photos.

Borneo Monster SnakeLocal villagers fear an increased threat of danger and death due to the snake-like monster’s brazen appearances recently.

Villagers in Borneo have long told bone-chilling tales of the legendary 100-foot-long shapeshifting serpent called “Nabau.” Recent photos seem to verify there claims and raise concern over the slithering serpent’s intentions.

Shapeshifting snakes, especially really big ones, pose a serious and impending need for heightened caution due to the insidious nature of their possible strikes. Shapeshifting typically involves physical changes such as alterations of age, gender, race, or general appearance or changes between human form and that of an animal (therianthropy), plant, or inanimate object. This means Nabau could hide itself as just about anything, from a blade of grass to a giant rock.

One of the riveting photos, taken from a helicopter by a member of a visiting flood monitoring team, show Nabau cruising the river in search of prey.
